Rhythm - Once upon a summer in Southwest Florida

"O" is for . . . Once upon a summer

Rhythm

We finish up the morning and afternoon activities, a bit of school, time at the pool, picking up sea shells while walking on the beach. I hurry into the house and get dinner started. I brush sand off my feet the best I can, and don't worry too much about the rest. The floor needs cleaning anyways. I know I'll get to it one day here soon.

The thunder rolls across southwest Florida as the summer storms it's way into our life.
The air is thick with salty humidity. The smell brings back memories of childhood visits to the island that remained in my heart from the moment I'd set foot on it. I knew then, I was home.

I close my eyes and breathe deeply, the salty air of my youth as I say a quick prayer for the one I love to remain safe.

Across the water, he watches carefully as the next afternoon storm rolls in. The Captain's eye is sharp and he is accustomed to the weather. He takes in  the sky black as night, with intermittent rays of light and bright streaks reflecting off the water and bouncing off the dark clouds. He presses on.

He's tired. He works, this man, in the hot sun all day. He's fulfilling his lifelong dream - a fisherman; He's fulfilling mine as well.

Once upon a summer dream, a little girl said a prayer. I smile, remembering.

I call the children to come in, all 3 boys dirty from head to toe with tad poles in hand, lizards in tow and an egg sack or two they have found. They are in search of a container to use as a home for their new friends.

The sweat rolls down their faces, big blue eyes shine with excitement from the afternoons adventures. Their spirit is not dampened as the rain falls yet again.

They know it will bring more tad poles.

As the storm looms, ominously in the sky, the house shakes with the deep rumble of thunder. Bad as it may look, I know this too shall pass, and there is light shining there, beyond the storm.

The steady rain begins to fall. I stop to take notice how it moves across the water, and travels across the flat landscape; sometimes raining on one side of the street, and not the other.

The water pools, as it begins to pour and the ground is saturated once again. All the brown from winter is gone now, and has been replaced with the deep, rich green of summer.

The heavy rains wash away the heat of the day, not completely, but enough.

It is fresh. I smile, thinking about how the washing away - really does make everything new.

As the pounding rain slows to a pitter-patter and the afternoon storm rolls on by. The southwest Florida sky shows promise of another colorful sunset.

There may be time yet, to run down to the beach and catch sight of it as the sun sinks below the horizon. With dark clouds moved on, we may even get to see the illusive green flash.

Maybe we will, but we won't rush.

One way or the other we'll peek outside to see what the summer sky has to offer. We'll soak up another evening sunset painted by the hand of God himself, especially for us.

I bow my head in a moment of gratitude. I breathe the salt air, and I remember my childhood prayer; To live near my island and have a family of my own. Once upon a summer . . . a little girl prayed.

Our boys run by, stopping only for a second, to notice the sun dipping down below the water's edge.

This is the rhythm of summer in southwest Florida.

Encouragement for Women - Peace

I've talked with a lot of people who are struggling with life in general and many who
are struggling with election results. So many are out of work, or have had their salaries
cut. Families are still loosing their homes by the minute and more of that is expected.
How do we find comfort when the world around us feels as though it is crumbling?

We've had personal struggles of the sort that would sensibly insight the use of medication on my part- I'm so not joking. If I were left to my own devices I'd be about one panic attack away from hospitalization. Seriously.

But, I've not been left to my own devices. I have the Holy Spirit to guide me, I can have
a peace that passes all understanding - all I have to do is remember to exercise it!

The bible is the living, breathing Word of God. I have access to it daily. By soaking it up,
I am exercising my faith - growing it - leaning on Jesus.

Our Creator hasn't promised us that life will not hurt. He has promised us that He will never leave us or forsake us - and that we can have peace in the storm.

It's easy to trust Him when things look good. It's not quite as easy when the going gets tough, but that is exactly when we need to trust Him the most. It may come more natural
to trust Him during the dark days if we've been practicing on a regular basis. I want to keep my mind steadfast, by filling it with His Word daily and putting it into practice.

Our God is mighty. He is steadfast and true. His perfect peace is ours for the taking.

How? Trust Him. No matter what the outlook or the outcome - trust Him. Have a heart of gratitude in the small things and in the big ones. There is always someone whose need is greater. Pray for them, reach out to do what you can. Remember we are here to serve Him - not the other way around. Thank Him, even for the hard stuff.
And walk in His peace.

I'm thankful today:
*grace for mommy
*friends who listen and check on me
*stormy days
*access to medicine
*food on the table
*healthy food for our children
*time outside
*field trips to the farm
*colors in Creation
*filling up on God's Word

Our homeschool week- Wrap up- New Adventures - Freebies

In my life this week…

#InstaEffect

I've been playing with my photo's again - wrote y'all a tutorial about some of the
new iphone apps here (they are some of my new #Faves)

In our homeschool this week…

Evening beach walk after bible study was a fun homeschool event this week. While I did my moms bible study - the boys went with the kiddos to look for tidal pools on the beach and see what critters they could find.
The boys learn so much while spending time outdoors - they become inspired to learn more.

This is one of our #FavoriteThings

What really happened:

Boys have so much fun destroying things
There was a nice man on the beach who thought it was perfectly fine for them to pounce and destroy his sand creation.

He must have once been a boy.

"D" is for Destroy

Are you blogging through the alphabet?

Places we go peeps we see…

So often the things we think are so important - are NOT the things God uses - Deb Bell #homeschool @ApologiaWorld #hsbloggersCaught Jenn @dazeofadventure lovin' on Rachel @Finding _Joy -as we soaked up #homeschool wisdom fr Deb Bell #hsbloggers

Have you heard me mention Deb Bell yet this week? Deb Bell . DEB BELL. deb bell.
I've met her before - but thanks to some hard work by Jenn @dazeofadventure  and the generosity of Apologia - some southwest Florida homeschool moms got to hang and soak up some of her homeschool wisdom.
Fortunately - Rachel Martin @Finding_Joy  happens to be visiting (working on #beechrt)
so I had the honor of spending a moment or two with her as well.

So looking forward to more time of fellowship as we learn the ins and outs of blogging at the end of January 31st - Feb 3 at the BEECH Retreat  - Join us!!! (it's ALL inclusive- just get here - all else is taken care of- parking, shuttles, room, food, workshops -ALL inclusive)

Thankful Thurs: I'm grateful for the time to sit with these ladies - to connect with other homeschool moms IRL. There were tears, there was encouragement - it was GOOD!

I'm thankful also for the friends who have encouraged me lately. Life isn't always easy. We all need a safe place. Grateful for those who "get me". When we connect in that way- it strengthens us as individuals, it strengthens us as sisters in Christ, and it glorifies God.

Sometimes even a quick comment, or facebook message, an email or phone call  - you never know when God may be using you to lift someone up.
Let's use our words to love others for the Lord.

thank you

Quote of the week . . .

Would you believe it's from - Deb Bell ?

It's easy to see God at work when all is well - what about when things aren't as you think they should be? Trusting Him when things are tough is one thing . . . .
recognizing Him there is another.

God's plan is always perfect! Learn to TRUST - He has a plan 4 ur child #homeschool #hsbloggers

What we're reading…

What we're reading. . . #homeschool
We love this  book - we picked it up on an adventure in the mountains of N. Georgia
My little artist is using it as inspiration for his art - #Fave

My lil artist . . . To go w his book study #homeschool #hsbloggers

I'm using it as inspiration for him to work on "er" sounds - recognizing letters and reading simple words. I'm also using the "Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons" book - and we have had great success with it. Because he loves to draw - the pictures are helping him overcome some "glitches".

Are you worried about your child being "on schedule" or up to "grade level" with their reading or other school work? Please let me know if you are in need of some encouragement or information on this subject. I've learned so much from Deb Bell and many others - I'm happy to pass on the information.

Simple moments - 5 min friday - Focus

start

Focus

from the time I was very young - I had a special place
we visited this place each and every year

as we drove across the bridge in the family car - we rolled down the windows
to breathe it all in

the salt air and warm breeze always made me feel like I was coming home.

in my special place - I sat with toes in the sand as I lifted my voice in song.
I searched for treasures hidden deep - each one a gift placed just for me.

and now I dig - still singing
as I search for the days gift from the sea
when I listen carefully I can hear God say, "Look closely"
and then, "look closer still"

when I slow to the pace of that little girl
when I lift my voice in song - I find His treasures
and life comes clearly into focus
I am home again

end

#1000 gifts and beyond :
* my special gifts from the sea
* remembering my heart for Jesus
* "Suffer the little children to come unto Me"
* singing to the Lord with a child's heart
* peace that passes all understanding
* slowing down
* moments of reflection
* fellowship without words
* the faithfulness of our God
* focus

Bigger Picture Moments - Rest . . .

"Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" Matt. 11:28

'Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart:
and you shall find rest unto your souls." Matt. 11:29

"And he came out of his sleep, and gave strong orders to the wind, and said to the sea, Peace, be at rest. And the wind went down, and there was a great calm." Mark 4:39

"Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad;
moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope" Acts 2:26

"that I may come to you in joy through the will of God, and together with you, find rest."Romans 15:32

"so that your trust might rest not on the wisdom of man but on the power of God." 1 Cor. 2:5

"And on His name shall the nations rest their hopes." Matt. 12:21

So thankful I was able to rest my weary soul this week - special time spent with my sister
and friends - in this very picturesque resting spot was just what the Dr. ordered.
I will make it a point to rest in Him more often in such lovely places!

Our wrap-up of Adventures this week:

In my life this week…

Fishing and shelling and cousins . . . oh my! We spent a couple of days at the beach, and time at a resort club with my sister and 3 nephews. We are soaking up the summer sun (carefully) while fishing and swimming our little fins off. I've been collecting plenty of pretty shells - which makes me really happy. We also had the honor of the presence of my daddy and brother for a couple of days this week. So, the keywords here are sun, fun, and family! Cousin time is hard to beat - so excited they will begin homeschooling this year. Yay!

We're cooking this week…

Potato Soup! get recipe here from Kids in the Kitchen and join us each Tuesday!
Homemade potato soup #kidsinthekitchen #recipes     Preparing for #kidsinthekitchen Link up on Tuesdays! #recipes #food

The boys were so proud that they peeled and chopped the potatoes and even chopped all the onion for this meal - and the cheese - and the mushrooms! They are cute lil kitchen helpers. I'm thankful they enjoy the time we spend hanging in the kitchen together and I'm thankful for our kitchen island to gather around!

Favorite thing this week…

We got to spend a couple of nights with my daddy and brother here - They all caught fresh fish - so we had a fish fry and good 'ole fashioned southern family supper - with cheese grits and all! Also the time spent with my sister and her boys - special cousin time is awesome!

Big brother has been helping me some with Bible time - I love hearing the boys lead their own devotions and prayer time. Knowing that we aren't the only ones teaching and guiding our children is a wonderful thing - when it's laid at the feet of Jesus. Seeing the Holy Spirit at work in their hearts always blows me away.

Evening Bible time brought to u by big brother #mobsociety #hsttd #hsmommas

Letter of  this week…       "W"

July Goals:
1. drink 4 big glasses of water each day and exercise 4x per week
2. Bible reading daily and scripture memory with the kiddos
3. pick up another part time / freelance - paying social media/ writing job to help hubs

1. ok, so I haven't drank ALL the water I'm supposed to - but I got my new meds (for RA) and I've had better energy - THANK YOU Jesus! I'm drinking more water and getting more exercise - lil at a time.
2. I am reading daily - scripture memory is going well with the kiddos and I'm reading with them each day - or having Mark or big brother do the reading on 2 of the days I didn't get to it (because with so much company this month - well, I've been a bit stretched) We've hosted 3 families here & visited another at their resort down the road (my sister and babes) So, considering all - I think we've done pretty well.
3. did tiny bit on this - not a whole lotta workin going on in July - with all the company - but we've enjoyed the fellowship and family
