Kids in the Kitchen - Link up #20 - Birthday cake time!

I'm joining my good friend Carrie @YoungLivingOilLady to bring you this link up!

It's birthday cake making time again in the Becton household - I thought I'd share a favorite recipe for fondant - use it like clay or play dough to make whatever shapes you need

Fondant - used by professionals to make some of the world's best cakes- well, let's just say - it isn't known for its great taste! It also carries a hefty price tag- but here's a recipe that tastes great, is fun to make, and is cheap cheap cheap!

Ingredients:

16 ounces white mini-marshmallows (use a good quality brand)
2 to 5 tablespoons water
2 pounds icing sugar
1/2 cup Crisco shortening (you will be digging into it so place in a very easily accessed bowl)

Directions:

Melt marshmallows and 2 tablespoons of water in a microwave or double boiler. To microwave, place the bowl in the microwave for 30 seconds, stir,  microwave for 30 seconds more, stir again, and continue doing this until melted. It takes about 2 1/2 minutes total.
Place 3/4 of the powdered sugar on the top of the melted marshmallow mix.
Now grease hands GENEROUSLY  - heavily grease the counter you will be using and dump the bowl of marshmallow/sugar mixture in the middle.
Knead marshmallow mixture while continuing to grease hands and add more powdered sugar - use food coloring to color batches of mixture - adding more sugar to keep it from becoming sticky.

We usually like regular icing on a cake - but use the fondant to make the fun shapes as decorations. These aren't fondant - but they were fun cake ideas - so I'll share them:

If you have birthday's to celebrate this summer - I'd love to see what sort of creative fun you come up with!

Oh my goodness...so fun! I am so not a baker. (my 4 year old got what he wanted for his birthday cake: brownies with the melted chocolate chips frosting -- and I'm certain it's only because that's all I ever make!) You would laugh hysterically at my attempts to do this...but maybe that's enough to give it a try ;)

What beautiful cakes! I especially love the one with the snail on it. I used to do some cake decorating years ago (before life became so busy!), and I miss it. You have inspired me!
