Kids in the Kitchen - Food On the Road - Link Up #7

What to do for food when you're on the road with kiddos?

It doesn't have to be unhealthy - or expensive - it can be tasty
It can even be an adventure!

You know the saying: "When in Rome. . . " well "When in Georgia - get ya' some uh them thar peanuts"

It even qualifies as a homeschool lesson :)

Eating local food when traveling is a great way to soak up the "culture" or even just widen
your horizons - people often think to order seafood when on the coast - be sure to find out
what the area you're visiting is known for when it comes to good vittles!

Packing plenty of veggies and fruits is important - we eat lots of raw baby carrots with
a bit of ranch dressing - bags of lettuce will travel pretty well too - and pop a potato in the
hotel microwave for a quick, hot and healthy meal on the go.

We also bring along a can of beans - a whole baked chicken - salsa and cheese to
roll up in tortillas for a yummy meal that most everyone will like!
I heated the beans in the microwave a bit - spread some on a tortilla
I pulled chicken off the bone ahead of time and stored it in a big baggie so it was
ready to go - I got tired of pulling it bit by bit off the bone - this solved my problem
Add chicken, cheese, salsa and lettuce if you have it
The kids ate them up!

Be sure to plan for an extra treat along the way. We enjoyed ice cream at
Indian Springs State Park in Georgia - it is a place I hope to return to!
There is a rich history and shady trees to sit under while you read about it
The springs are known for their healing properties since the days of the Creek Indians
who lived here before - I'll be writing about my wonderful experience there soon!

Grab  a button (from below or the code on my side bar)
and link up your favorite family recipes - we love to see kids in the pics but it isn't required
to encourage families to get in the kitchen together and come back to the family table!

We do hope you'll join us and please remember it's nice to visit at least a couple
of the other members of the Linky - we've had some wonderful recipes!
Enjoy! Thank you much for joining us - God bless

That is such a great idea. I do so get tired of trying to find healthy items out when traveling like that. I'll have to keep that in mind next time we go off :)

great ideas! We always stay in hotels with refrigerators and usually microwaves, too. We also like hotels that offer free breakfast :) But we usually bring whole grain bread, nut butters, fruit and veggies and pack lunches and then just eat dinner out ... saves money and we end up going a little higher end for dinner since we saved on lunch!

We usually try to stay in places that have kitchens, just because buying 3 meals a day for the 6 of us would be SO expensive. We pack our food, too. :-) It looks like you had a wonderful time! I can't wait to read more about your "adventurez!" :-)

Your tortillas are making me hungry...and reminding me of the Courageous movie where Carmen gives her hubby a plain one for lunch...hee hee :D

Hate that I didn't get to see you on your travels, but hopefully soon :)

Sadly, I have nothing to link up because I am the world's worst at eating unhealthily, but I'm working on it :)

We pack a cooler too! Usually with some big Bento meals that cover a meal and a snack or two. It's so much healthier...and we can enjoy a picnic lunch at a state park or playground instead of sitting at a restaurant and paying $$$!
