Frugal Family - Crock pot chicken broth

In an effort to save money this year,  I'm joining my friends Marcy +Ben and Me  as well as Sam +Sam's Noggin  to bring you this weekly  link up full of tips for becoming a more Frugal Family. We will be sharing ideas to help you save money on groceries and meals, homeschool, crafts, and plenty of frugal DIY posts. We've made many sacrifices so that I can stay at home to teach the boys, and I've become pretty frugal in order to help make that possible and to keep it that way. It's become a challenge I truly enjoy, and one I look forward to sharing with you!

This week:

Chicken bone broth in the crock pot! Letting no part of the chicken go unused, cooking the bones slowly in a crock pot is a healthy, tasty and frugal alternative to store bought.

We cook ours all day with a bit of sea salt, red pepper & rosemary. Sometimes we add onion, carrots, celery stalks (even the leftover flowered stem is great for flavoring the broth) Spoon out the bones and veggies before storing in jars.

Frugal projects are often green projects too. We recycle jars and use them to store broth in the freezer. This is the first time I've frozen jars and we've had great success. I was sure to allow the broth to cool in the jars before freezing. They sat on the counter until they cooled to room temperature and then went in the fridge to chill, then were added to the freezer. The other important tip is to leave plenty of room at the top of the jar for expansion. (A great lesson for the homeschool kiddos)
